From railway locomotive manufacturer to exhibition center and creative hub

The former industrial complex of the locomotive manufacturer – dubbed “Fabbrica del Vapore” (Steam Factory) – was converted into a modern art and design hub. Different spaces were intentionally created to be self-sufficient and functional within a larger multi-purpose hall. Spatial flexibility and reducing permanent superstructures allow hosting a variety of events with installations, especially art exhibitions.

Catering and reception are located in the west wing and the façade on via Messina was reopened and directed outwards. Two reinforced concrete slabs connect spaces over three levels in the opposite wing. Sections of the roof are transparent with metal frames and glass panels; the roof supported by a wooden structure similar to the original in shape and materiality, with overlapping insulating panels and tiling. Existing walls made of exposed brickwork were mostly preserved.
